My job…

I figure with some of the useless posts out there in R@ land, I might as well talk about my life for a second.

For those of you that are unaware, I used to work for Circuit City until their demise in March 2009.  I was unemployed, but was still taking classes part-time at NJIT to finish my degree.  In November of 2009, a friend of mine asked me to come to his job and take a look at a computer that he was having a problem with.  Needless to say, I fixed the computer problem and was asked to stick around to fix some other things.  That was when I became the “facilities manager” at the School of Rock in South Hackensack.  Not only did I handle maintenance, but I was frequently asked to help with managerial tasks since the general manager was a little overwhelmed at the time.

A few months later, the owners were ready to open up a new school in Waldwick NJ and, having seen the work I performed during my time at South Hackensack, asked me to be the general manager.  After starting as GM in February, I can honestly say that I love my job.  Not only am I making good money, but I’m doing something I love to do.  I’m around music all day long, not to mention awesome people.  I also have a pretty sweet office (hopefully those free chairs I ordered arrive next week.  Thanks lefk0!).

I’m set to graduate from college in a few weeks (BS in Business), and it kind of ticks me off that I didn’t need the degree to land this job.  Either way, I feel accomplished and relieved to be done with school.  I was told by my employer that we will be opening up 3 more School of Rock locations, and that he wants me to move to each location to handle the start ups.  He then told me that once the schools were all opened, that he wants to retire and hire me as a “regional manager” of sorts.  This all seems pretty exciting for me, and hopefully the business is successful and my career path continues as planned.  But even if it doesn’t, I won’t be disappointed.  I’m getting paid to do something I love, and I couldn’t be happier.

Now, for my own personal satisfaction, I’m going to post a picture of my office…

I want you to know, Sam, that I completely jealous of not only your sweet office, but the fact that you get to be around music all day (my #1 passion). Congrats man, gotta love when shit works out nicely like that. Now just to pay off those pesky students loans :0

Don’t worry man, I’m in the same boat with the fucking loans.

So what exactly does a GM of School of Rock do on a daily basis?

I pretty much run the business. Handle staffing, marketing, advertising, payroll, etc.

We also have a few subsidiary businesses that I handle. One is our kinder rock program for little kids, and the other is our recording studio.
